Evolution - Specialization

Impression

A group of birds loses its bearing and gets stranded on the Galapagos Islands. The islands offer a rich but diverse food supply to the newcomers. On some of the islands, seeds are the main source of nutrition, on others cactuses or insects.

Adaption

When Charles Darwin lands on the Galapagos Islands, he notices birds that look and twitter alike, but show certain distinct features. A closer look reveals that the beaks of the birds have adapted to their main food source.

Selection

Darwin’s finches have adapted to their respective habitats by means of specialization and have extended the biodiversity of the species.
